HINGANUBUZIRANENGE Boosting Food safety Chain in Rwanda

The project aims empowering agro dealers so that they acquire the required skills to transmit safety information to farmers that will enable them to safely handle and apply pesticides/fertilizers. The project area is the districts of Rwamagana, Bugesera, Kamonyi, Rulindo, Gicumbi, Musanze, Nyabihu and Rubavu
The project general objective is to consolidate food security in Rwanda through strengthening of food safety chain with enhanced use of safe agricultural inputs that limits environmental harm and positively impact consumer’s health. Specifically, this will involve: • Enhancing food safety skills of Agro-dealers, Agri-inputs companies, and farmers • Contributing to a relevant food safety regulatory framework and enhance its effective implementation.

Project achievements

Since January 2024, AGRIFOP is implementing a project funded by the Delegation of European Union in Rwanda, entitled FED/2023/451-100: HINGANUBUZIRANENGE: Boosting food safety chain in Rwanda

  • Organizing farmers within the Action area into producer groups and building their capacities.
  • Organizing agro dealers into groups depending on their zones of operations for easy supply and sales of inputs
  • Training agro-dealers (including those under Kungahara actions) on bio-Safety and Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) in general and on vegetables and fruits in particular.
  • Linking farmers to agri-inputs companies/ Agro dealers as well as to sustainable and stable markets for their produce and linking agro dealers to big input companies/ suppliers
  • Support dialogue/coordination of agro-dealers/agri-inputs companies with relevant public institutions for effective implementation of food safety standard and regulations
